What is LOGCAP?
With ongoing global military commitments the Army opts to contract out support in the area of logistics. This is not a new concept. Basically the Army uses contractors for certain services so that Army personnel and resources can keep their focus in task and mission. This type of contracting has been used for hundreds of years, from George Washington’s day through the World Wars and right through to today and the foreseeable future.
Some such overseas jobs are: food, provisioning transport mechanical maintenance engineering and building medical supplies physical security ITT, Fluor, DynCorp and KBR are some of the main LOGCAP contractors presently in operation.
How’s the Weather Over There?
It gets hot in Afghanistan and it gets cold in Afghanistan. Imagine a dry, hot Arizona summer and a cold, blustery Colorado winter. January, 2007 had freezing conditions for every single night of that month. You will be accommodated in tents so you will feel the temperature. Portable heaters are not allowed so you will be left to your own ingenuity to stay warm and somewhat comfortable.
You will be sharing these tents with up to as many as 140 other workers. In the summertime your goal will be to create as much ventilation as possible as you will be attempting to combat the 110 degree temperatures. There are other environmental factors to consider as well, such as the lovely “camel spiders” and other snakes, critters and things you will not even believe until you see them up close and personal. This is why defense jobs pay what they do.
Working Conditions and Challenges
The words “tough” and “conditions as demanding as any you will ever find” are mentioned by some of the contractors who hire workers for these army jobs. In the least you will be working and living in a hostile area and you might just be needed to function in a war zone. A break from the large tents might see you in a roomy 7 x 9 B-hut with all of its luxury.
The days will be long and the work will be difficult. Your home life cannot prepare you for the way of life overseas. Yes the compensation is good but you should not consider it lightly. The wages will be earned under hard circumstances which will ask more from you than you expect. On top of that you will need a strong self to work alongside and for very strong personalities that often work in these locations.
If you think you can cut it, want a means to some personal and financial goals then take some time and look into the opportunities of military jobs at LOGCAP!
