The subject of the best hitters in baseball is one that can be discussed for hours, but many people have claimed that Albert Pujols could be the best hitter that we’ll see in our lifetimes.
To simplify this discussion and keep it focused on the modern era, I’ll only be considering the players of the past 30 years of baseball.
It can be enormously difficult to compare players from the different eras of baseball. There are so many variables that have changed over the years, from the equipment to the fields. It just wouldn’t be fair to compare Pujols to classic hitters like Ted Williams or Willie Mays.
Since so much has changed in the sport over the years, it’s impossible to rationalize how a player in the modern era would perform in previous eras, and vice versa. We can, however, discuss the hitters that have come and gone in our generation, and there are several reasons why Albert Pujols should be in the running for the best hitter in the modern era.
First, Pujols is young. He’s only 29 years old and he’ll likely continue to improve on his game, or at least maintain it. More importantly, he’s been consistent throughout his career. Examining some of his statistics will show us how.
Albert Pujols’ career batting average stands at .334. An average like that is usually enough to win the league. His numbers haven’t ever dipped far, either, with his lowest single-season average sitting at .312 in his second season. After that season, his lowest single-season average has been .327.
Pujols is also a consistent home-run hitter, with his lowest single-season home run tally at 32. He’s broken 40 homers in 5 of his 9 seasons. These are just a few of the impressive statistics in his career.
With every year that Pujols posts an impressive season, it becomes more difficult to argue the claim that he is the best batter of the current generation of baseball. By the time he retires, it’s quite possible that he will be considered the best hitter in our lifetimes.
